A Pennsylvania German Christmas Church Tour will be held on Sunday, December 22nd at 1:30 p.m. in the historic sanctuary of Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church, 3441 Devonshire Road, Allentown, PA 18103.
Led by local and church historian Joshua A. Fink, the tour will teach participants about the almost 275 year history of the church, with a special focus on the Pennsylvania German celebration of Christmas. The 195 year old sanctuary of Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church will be decorated for Christmas and participants will see and learn more about the church's elaborate Christmas "putz" (Manger Scene) that graces the sanctuary, consisting of 27 inch Fontanini Nativity figures imported from Italy, palm trees and live plants. Visitors on the tour will have an opportunity to learn about Christmas in colonial America, when and by whom the "putz" and Christmas Tree were introduced to America, and how the Pennsylvania German gift bringers of the "Christkindle" and "Belsnickle" evolved into Kriss Kringle and Santa Claus, as well as a few other Pennsylvania German Christmas traditions along the way. Refreshments will be served following the tour.
