VOCATION SUNDAY
On Sunday August 31 (Labor Day weekend) we will have a special blessing of Christian Vocation. What is vocation? The word means “call,” and at one time meant specifically God’s call to religious orders (for someone to become a priest, nun, etc.) However, during the Reformation period there began to be a change in the way we think about vocation. We understand now that for everyone, the call to Christian vocation begins at baptism. We are all washed with water, marked with the cross of Christ, and filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit in a public celebration. In our baptism, God adopts us and makes us worthy to serve one another with joy, not to earn salvation, but to show forth God’s love. Everything we do - at home or in public, in church or not in church – can be done to serve others and honor God.
At worship on August 31, we will offer prayers for all those who work in any occupation, and at the end of the service we will have a special blessing of Christian Vocation. For the next three Sundays (August 17, 24 and that day) you are encouraged to bring in something that symbolizes your occupation (either in the home, outside the home, or both). These items will be placed on a table set up at the front of the sanctuary. It will be interesting to see all the items that show up, as we observe Labor Day with a blessing on all service to God’s people.
