KEEP THE CHANGE (and give it to a good cause)!
Jerusalem Western Salisbury (in conjunction with Outreach, Inc. and Thrivent Financial for Christians) will be hosting a Food Packaging Event in March as part of our 275th Anniversary Celebration. As you may remember, we had an event in October where we put together 5000 meals. This time we aim to package 10,000! Any age may participate (details below) and we will again be inviting friends and neighbors from the community to join us for this worthy cause.
But first, we need to do a little fundraising. Each meal serving is $.25 – yes, just one quarter provides a meal for a hungry child of God. So what we’d like to ask is this: save up your change this week and then come to donate it on Sunday March 8. Volunteers with buckets will be at the doors at the close of worship. So come that day to give a little that will go a long, long way! (Note: thank you to Thrivent Financial for their $1000 grant toward this project!)
THE EVENT
Purpose: Creating food kits - a beans and rice dish for distribution to local food banks that can be put together in assembly-line fashion. Each package contains six servings, including quality soy protein, dehydrated vegetables, and 21 essential vitamins and minerals. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! It's a simple process, and on-the-job training is provided.
Date and Time: Saturday March 21, 2015; 9 am to 12 noon (approximately; we may finish sooner or later depending on the number of volunteers).
Place: Jerusalem Western Salisbury Chapel
THE HISTORY
From birth, the intake of vital nutrients is essential to the growth and development of a healthy individual. Good nutrition, particularly in the first few years of life, is important in establishing and maintaining a good foundation that has implications on a child’s future physical and mental health, academic achievement, and economic productivity. Unfortunately, food insecurity and hunger is an obstacle that threatens that foundation around the world. Within our borders, more than one in 6 children do not know where their next meal is coming from and often go to bed hungry. In developing countries, nearly 40,000 children die every day from malnutrition, starvation, and hunger-related diseases.
So what’s the solution? The issue is multi-faceted and complicated. But there is an immediate solution at hand: balanced high nutrition meals. A team of internationally recognized nutritionists has developed a food formula comprised of rice, fortified soy protein, vegetables, and essential vitamins & minerals. A macaroni and cheese dish has also been developed for distribution to local food banks and pantries for the food insecure in the United States.
•Protein Rich: Each package contains 66 grams (six 11 gram servings) of protein.
•Vegetables: Each package contains dehydrated vegetables.
•Vitamin and mineral fortified: Each serving contains 21 essential vitamins & minerals.
•Simple to Prepare: Boil package contents in water for twenty minutes.
•Long life: Each sealed package has a shelf life of three years.
Volunteer groups across the country are packing such meals and donating them to local food banks. And now, Jerusalem Western Salisbury in conjunction with Outreach, Inc. and Thrivent Financial for Christians will be hosting such a Food Packaging Event. The meals will be donated to a local food bank.
